Colombia's Leader Warns 'I Shall Take Up Arms Again' if United States Intervenes Militarily.

President Trump and Colombia's president have escalated the volume in their verbal conflict, further raising strains in their relations after American military units targeted Venezuela to remove Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has narcotics facilities and processing labs and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Escalating Rhetoric and Claims

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Trump threatened analogous military action against Bogotá, stating Colombia is also "very ill" and governed by a problematic figure who enjoys creating the drug and distributing it to the US."

Although Colombia is the globe's biggest cocaine-producing country, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the trade.

A Deteriorating Partnership

The country for decades served as a key ally of the United States in the fight combating drug cartels and enjoyed bipartisan support in the US capital, yet ties have deteriorated dramatically after Trump was elected.

The nation's drug trade is largely controlled by guerrilla factions such as the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members demobilised following a historic peace agreement.

Colombia's Firm Response

Upon being questioned whether a military operation like that in Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump said: "I like the sound of that to me."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who disarmed in the 1990s, categorically refuted Trump's claims. "I am not an illegitimate leader nor am I a narco," he declared.

"The US president speaks uninformed. End the false accusations," he wrote in a message.

"If US bombs target peasants, they will transform into numerous insurgents across the countryside. And should they arrest the president, whom a large part of the country admires and supports, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the nation," the president cautioned.

From Fighter to President

The president dedicated some years as a young man belonging in the left-wing M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed that he never took part in armed clashes. Upon leaving the group, he participated in creating a new constitution over three decades ago and eventually served as a prominent senator. He was mayor of the capital city before being elected the presidency.

"I pledged not to touch arms again ... but in defense of my country I will take up arms again," he vowed.

Heightened Measures and Widespread Opposition

The Colombian defence minister announced that Petro's personal security had received additional support.

Several members of Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump, but voices from across the ideological divide have rejected the threats of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Political and Economic Sanctions

Washington withdrew his travel authorization after he encouraged US military personnel to disobey any illegal orders. Months later, authorities imposed financial sanctions against the president, his wife and several associates.

Simultaneously the US was building up its military presence in the Caribbean and striking suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces also carried out attacks on boats in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
